Welcome to the MyFlare application blog page, where we want to hear from the people! Please tell us your thoughts, concerns, comments, and suggestions. We are very excited to create something that we believe can genuinely help people, and can't wait to share this with the world. The need for personal safety will never go away, so we at MyFlare propose a question for discussion: What makes you feel safe? Is it your weapon? Is it your dog? Could it be your gated community, alarm system, or even the city in which you live? It comes down to a philosophical question of perception, but an interesting topic, nonetheless.

So, MyFlare Community, what makes you feel safe?

A top story on CNN.com today discusses how a woman used her cell phone video camcorder to record a man that was burglarizing her home and ultimately sexually assaulted her.  The video captured approximately 13 seconds of footage, and is being used by police in order to apprehend the assailant.  Upon activation, not only does MyFlare automatically call 911 and send your pre-selected contacts a customized emergency distress message including your GPS location, but MyFlare also has the option to turn on the camcorder for 20 seconds in the EXACT same manner in which was used by this woman.  Thereafter, the video is automatically sent in the dispatched emails.  If she had MyFlare she may have been able to deter this awful attack.  A link to the article is found below: http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/06/09/california.sexual.assault.video/index.html?hpt=hp_p1&iref=NS1

I'm curious if there are currently any plans to port this application to the Windows Phone platform and marketplace, and if there are what kind of timetable are we looking at? I'm really interested in the app, so hopefully the WP community doesn't get left out in the cold.

I'm a student in a large city and I spend a lot of time in the library late at night. The closing of this summer term was no different and I found myself doing marathon studying sessions at extremely solumn and dark hours all alone. When walking from building to building and onto transporation all the way till I came home and felt safe and secure, I had the comfort and security of knowing MyFlare was right by my side. For the first time ever, I was alone and didn't feel so alone. I knew MyFlare was just a click away. I purchased MyFlare three weeks ago and it has been the greatest purchase to date.

Hi, I think this is a great app. I'm moving to a "transitional" neighborhood in the bay area so a "panic button" is just what I need. It installed fine, and I used the "test" feature to be sure my friends got the contacts. I would suggest that when the app is in test mode that the message read something like this: THIS IS A TEST OF MY EMERGENCY MYFLARE BEACON. i AM NOT CURRENTLY IN DANGER, BUT IF i EVER AM IN TROUBLE, YOU WILL RECEIVE THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE: (then just use what you already have written) My poor sister called in a panic because she didn't see the "test mode" at the beginning of the message. I think my suggested message would help the people you have made emergency contacts understand what is going on, and to know what to expect if there is trouble. This will help them realize if they do get an emergency call that it is legit, something they are familiar with, and not just some strange spam from Nigeria! Thanks for a great app-I feel more secure walking home at night now.

After you set this all up in the program... how do you test it and how do you know when its not is test mode any more?

You can always test the app using the "Test Mode" feature. All your pre-selected contacts will be notified that it is a test and to ignore the message.

For real emergencies, push "911 Emergency" or "Non-911 Emergency."

Seattle is a city that has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the nation. However, recently there, a man tried to abduct a child near a school. Parents are frantic and police have issued safety warnings and sent parents tips. Similar to the tips we have been providing the MyFlare communitiy during the holiday season, Seattle police offered the following tips:

  • Start paying closer attention and being more consciously aware of your surroundings
  • Realize when you are in a vulnerable location
  • Trust your gut - if you feel like you are in a bad situation, do something about it immediately

Parents -- Put MyFlare on your children's phones, teach them how to use it and especially how serious it is to use it.

Be Safe!

Below are some safety tips for celebrating the new year:

   • Use public transport or taxis where possible and exercise patience with other commuters waiting for these services.

   • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. If you feel threatened or find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, leave immediately and go to a place where you feel safe.

   • Trust your instincts and recognise warning signs.

   • Develop a network of people who will assist you in an emergency and let them know where you are going and when you are likely to return.

   • Look after your friends.

   • Consider the necessity of the items you are carrying in your handbag or wallet, and try to keep valuables to a minimum.

Be safe and Happy New Year from the MyFlare team!
